MAGNET Television: Q&A With Thor Harris

Thor Harris has friends. Tons of them. And you own records by a lot of them and probably wish they were your friends, too. But they’re not. So Harris has you covered. He and his two main musical marras—Peggy Ghorbani and Sarah “Goat” Gautier—release music under the fitting moniker Thor & Friends, and they have two new albums, 3 and 4 (Joyful Noise). The LPs’ guest list reads like MAGNET’s back pages: Low, Wye Oak, Jolie Holland, Bill Callahan, Deerhoof, Michael Gira, Jarboe, Godspeed You! Black Emperor and others you aren’t cool enough yet to care about. The albums are adventurous listening, featuring minimalist-leaning pieces both compositional and improvisational that are rooted in polyrhythmic percussion. Despite his dexterity as a drummer, Harris might be best known for writing How To Tour In A Band Or Whatever, a must-read for anyone planning to spend time on the road playing music.
