Marion Raw neatly sums up her latest single, “You Gotta,” as an “uncensored exploration of our own human messiness,” with a little of “love’s unruliness” thrown in there for good measure.
“It’s a reflection on my personal struggle to find connection amid life’s absurdities and disappointments,” she says. “It’s not a polished journey but a real, disheveled one.”
Born Marion Sosa in Mexico City, the bilingual singer/songwriter spent much of her childhood in airports and hotels with an ex-beauty-queen mother who was always on the move. Kicking off her career as an award-winning mixed-media artist, Raw eventually shifted her focus to music. She enjoyed some Spanish-language success with Mexico City duo Love La Femme before striking out on her own in 2022.
Collaborating with director Isabelle Abbitt, Raw brings a visual artist’s touch to the video for “You Gotta,” staying true to the song’s spontaneous spirit and Velvet Underground-style minimalism.
“The video is a polaroid of a wonderfully chaotic night,” says Raw. “It’s inspired by Andy Warhol’s split screen in Chelsea Girls. We kept it delightfully simple and nostalgic, using a Hi8 camera. It’s intended to be viewed in vertical format on a smartphone, enhancing the intimacy of the experience.”
We’re proud to premiere Marion Raw’s “You Gotta” video.
