Alice in Wonderland gets a twisted update in the new video from the cinematic, charismatic Annabel (lee). “The first few bars of ‘If You Show Me (Alice)’ immediately bring to mind a sense of isolation,” says Sheila Ellis, one-half of a husband/wife duo that also includes Richard E. “It felt like something akin to Lewis Carroll’s Alice lost in an underworld, only this time faced with a broken heart.”
With a live show that includes a 10-piece orchestra, Annabel (lee)’s lofty, atmospheric folk/jazz/classical hybrid has found a niche in certain corners of the L.A. art world and on the city’s public radio stations. The duo also has some pretty interesting fans, including David J Haskins (Bauhaus, Love And Rockets). Haskins plays the Mad Hatter in the “If You Show Me (Alice)” video, which also features Donnie Darko’s James Duval as the White Rabbit and Haskins’ romantic partner, model/actress Darenzia Elizabeth, as Alice.
“When they told me about the Alice in Wonderland theme, Scott Hove’s amazing art instillation, Cakeland, came to mind as the ideal location—I love the unique surreality of the place,” says Haskins. “The video turned out to be the perfect storm, with the cast, crew and location all coming together quite beautifully to create a fantastical, dark psychological fever dream by way of Lewis Carroll, Fellini and Italian giallo.”
