New Orleans roots stalwarts Cowboy Mouth have chosen a rather novel way to tease their first new music in more than a decade. Founding member John Thomas Griffith explains.
“I thought of songs I cover in my solo acoustic shows,” he says. “‘Fat Bottomed Girls’ is one of them. I told (drummer) Fred (LeBlanc) that it would be great if we could do it with a bluegrass feel, and he agreed. Frankie (Grocholski) plays a great flat-picking acoustic-guitar lead on the song—and that really sets it off.”
Cowboy will road test the song for the first time in front of a live audience on the main stage at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival on May 3.
“Fat Bottomed Girls” one of 10 tracks on the self-released Cover Yo’ Azz, which upends classics like Sinatra’s “My Way,” the Replacements’ “Can’t Hardly Wait,” the Who’s “The Real Me” and R.E.M.’s “Perfect Circle” in the joyously unhinged way only Cowboy Mouth can. Look for it August 15.
Until then, we’re proud to premiere Cowboy Mouth’s take on “Fat Bottomed Girls”—as sung by a pirate. Or so we’re told.
