The Whigs Got Ideas: 10 Songs Julian Wishes The Whigs Wrote

whigslogo1Like most bands, the Whigs—guitarist/vocalist Parker Gispert, drummer Julian Dorio and bassist Tim Deaux—have had to endure their fair share of rough patches during their eight-year existence, including major-label troubles and lineup changes, but perhaps these bumps in the road were merely the stars aligning for the Athens, Ga., trio. The label issues prompted them to record and release their debut album, 2005’s Give ‘Em All A Big Fat Lip independently, earning them the title of “the best unsigned band in America” from Rolling Stone. It wasn’t long before they were signed to ATO Records—which issued the band’s critically acclaimed second release, Mission Control, in 2008—and playing high-profile shows at festivals and late-night talk shows and touring with some really famous names. New album In The Dark is the Whigs’ grittiest and most explosive album yet. Ever the kings of the road, the Whigs are currently on tour in support of the release, but they’ll also be guest-editing magnetmagazine.com all week. Read our brand new Q&A with the Whigs and our 2008 feature on them.

Dorio:
1. “Ruby Tuesday” by the Rolling Stones
This one doesn’t need much of an explanation. It’s just perfect. Video

2. “Narcolepsy” by Ben Folds Five
The first time I ever heard this song, I was floored. Now when I hear it, I am still floored. Video

3. “Very Friendly Lighthouses” by Vic Chesnutt
For five and half minutes, the world stops moving when I hear this song. Perfect. Video

4. “Rumble” by Link Wray & His Ray Men
If we could only have a fraction of this song’s swagger. Amazing. Video

5. “Panda” by Dungen
One of the most wonderfully psychedelic pop songs of our time, with a vicious recording to boot. Video

6. “A Salty Salute” by Guided By Voices
At only 1:29, I always wish it would keep going, but that’s what makes it so great! Video

7. “Search And Destroy” by Iggy And The Stooges
Arguably the coolest song ever. I always wish I was driving a tank when this song comes on. Video

8. “Gimme Back My Bullets” by Lynyrd Skynyrd
I wish my name was Artimus Pyle and that I played on this track. Video

9. “Sowing The Seeds Of Love” by Tears For Fears
This song never seems to end, but it’s so good! Video

10. “I’m Just Talkin’ About Tonight” by Toby Keith
No, I am not kidding. Pure genius. This was an easy one for me, although I’d like to list his whole catalog. Video
