Richard Hawley’s Notes From Sheffield: My Dog

HawleylogoA deep-voiced, working-class songwriter with an affinity for ’50s-era crooners, American country music and grand orchestration, Richard Hawley has paid tribute to his hometown of Sheffield, England, through songwriting that serves as a sepia-toned photograph of timeless places and love-troubled lives. While it may seem as if nothing changes in Hawley’s stylishly retro work, sixth album Truelove’s Gutter (Mute) is a deceptively tranquil sea change of sonics—employing glass harmonica, waterphone and other ethereal sounds—and themes, with the album delving into lyrical topics of dashed hopes, drug addiction and, of course, love gone wrong. Befitting its title, Truelove’s Gutter finds Hawley trawling Sheffield’s shadows and back alleys on his most spacious, soul-baring album to date. Hawley is guest editing magnetmagazine.com this week. Read our Q&A with him.

Border_Collie550Hawley: Talking of changing everything, my dog Fred changed everything for me. I walk miles with him. I have changed for the better. Man’s best friend? Could be. I suppose I am not writing a lot in words but maybe saying a fair bit in thought. [Hawley didn’t have access to a usable photo of his dog, so the image above is of a collie that resembles Fred.]

MP3 At 3PM: Susurrus Station

susurrusstation3694J. Breeden and Sara Dyberg of Susurrus Station have found a way of harmoniously combining the experimental vibe of the Mars Volta with the retro-rock sound of the Raconteurs. But wait, up pops urban Greek folk music and moody vocals you’d expect from Nick Cave. Breeden and Dyberg bring to the table a phenomenal display of culture and expansive instrumental talent that makes Susurrus Station and its songs almost mind-boggling. Here are two such tracks from the band’s Add A Day Going West (due November 10 on Aio).

In The News: Vampire Weekend, U2, Ted Leo, Robyn Hitchcock, The Killers, The Clientele And Free MP3s

vampireweekendWe can’t even explain the mechanics of the limited-edition, one-time, 500-count pressing of Robyn Hitchcock’s live DVD/CD, I Often Dream Of Trains In New York (Yep Roc, November 11), which features some bizarre fold-out contraption, so we encourage you to pre-order it and find out for yourself. Richard Hawley’s Notes From Sheffield: Guitars, Pedals And Amps

LEsPaulguitar

Hawley: A great sadness was with me when I heard of the death of Les Paul, but also a great thankfulness, too. He made it to the ripe old age of 94 and what a life. He and Leo Fender (and lots of other inventors) made it possible for music as we know it today to exist. In fact, we take it all for granted. Without them, it is difficult to imagine what life would be like. Their impact was that huge. I salute you, Les, I really do. And I thank you, too. I also thank all fearless pioneers of sound, all the mad pedals and amplifiers and guitars that make it possible to “paint” with sound. I call upon all of us to bow our heads in thanks, then raise them again in celebration of the life of a great, great man who walked amongst us and changed everything.

Film At 11: Dizzee Rascal

Thanks to some help from director Ben Drury and photographers Tim & Barry, not to mention some sponsorship from Nike, British rapper Dizzee Rascal creates a wonderfully mellow rap video. Witness the definition of chill. All blue pastels and chalk drawings, this promo might not put you to sleep, but it’ll certainly send you to a happy place. Rascal’s new album, Tongue N’ Cheek, was just released in Europe.
